Learning So Many Lives

Use the following steps to learn the tune So Many Lives

Start by downloading So Many Lives – vn2 with phrasing – this tutorial uses this version of the music.

Next step is to listen to the tune – So Many Lives (with drum beat) get a feel for the structure and rhythm of the tune.

Now you are ready to start.

Begin with line 1, the first phrase. Listen and play phrase 1 as many times as you need to get it right.

Line 2, phrase 2 – listen and play phrase 2 again repeat as needed.

Now that you can play phrases 1 and 2 listen and play phrases 1&2 together – this is lines 1,2 3 and 4 of the music, the first part of the tune.

The second part of the tune comprises lines 5 to 8 and is a bit trickier than the first part so we will break it down.

Starting with line 5, the first two bars (17 & 18) are phrase 3 – Listen and play phrase 3.  When you’ve got it right proceed to the next phrase 4, bars 19 & 20.  Again listen and play phrase 4 until you are comfortable with them.  You will have already seen that line 5 and 7 are the same!

Now try the whole line – bars 17, 18, 19 & 20

The last phrase to master is line 6, phrase 5.  This is also the last line 8 so get this one and you’ve got the whole tune.

Time to play the second part of the tune lines 5 to 8, the phrases 3, 4 and 5 that you have just mastered.

Well done.  Now you can play the whole tune.

Learning Peter Mackenzie Warren – part 2

Well done mastering the first part (click here for part 1), now to move onto the second part.

We start with phrase 4 (bars 9 & 10) – listen and play – repeat as needed to get clarity and consistency.

Now its on to the last phrase #5, bars 11 & 12 – listen and play – again repeat as needed to get clarity and consistency.

Now combine those two phrases – listen and play

The tune finishes with two phrases we have already learnt – 1 & 3 – as the last line of the tune.  So lets play the second part which comprises phrases 4, 5 1 and 3 –  listen and play the second part.  Repeat as needed.

Having mastered the second part you can now play the two parts of Peter Mackenzie Warren – practice at various speeds until you have mastered it.

Learning Peter Mackenzie Warren – part 1

Peter MacKenzie Warren is best known as the namesake of a popular 4/4 competition bagpipe march composed by the Scottish dance-band accordion player Tom Muirhead. The tune was named after Muirhead’s grandson and became a well-known favorite played by pipe bands around the world.

To learn this tune just follow these simple steps.

Start by listening to the tune. You will notice that we are playing just two parts of this tune.

Now download and print the pdf music score for the first two parts.  The score is available in the current music book but for this learning process we are using a modified score.

Looking at the music score you will see that the first two parts of this tune are made up of 5 phrases.  Yes that’s right only five phrases to learn!

Start with phrase one, the first two bars – listen and play along.  Repeat as much as needed to be able to play with clarity.

Now look at phrase two – listen and play – again repeat until you are playing with clarity.

Once you are sure about the first two phrases you can put them together – listen and play

The first part of this tune comprises phrase 1 & 2 (which you’ve already mastered 🙂 then phrase one is repeated and the part then concludes with the third phrase (you will notice that the first bar (#7) of this phrase is the same as the first bar of phrase 2.

Listen and play phrase 3, the concluding two bars of the first part.

Now put it all together – play the first part.  Repeat until you are playing with clarity and consistency.  All good?  Well done.  That’s the first part of Peter Mackenzie Warren completed.
